It’s the ancient Hermitage in Pienza, a few kilometers away from Siena. It’s a truly enchanted place, still not enough known by the tourists. The Hermitage is a complex site of room-like caves carved in the sandstone where, up until the XIV century, the hermit monks used to live, meditate and pray, and where they created beautiful sacred sculptures and low reliefs.
It was then later used as a hiding place by the partisans during the war, but soon after it was completely forgotten and abandoned until a few years ago, when thanks to the initiative of a few private citizens, it was bring back to life and salvaged from the spontaneous vegetation which took over the place for decades.
